State vs. Four accused — Hathras rape and murder case

In September 2020, a 19-year-old woman died following an alleged assault in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. On 2 March 2023, an SC/ST court acquitted three accused and convicted one individual of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, who was later granted bail on 13 October 2026. Separately, on 27 August 2026, the Allahabad High Court ordered the state government to relocate and provide rehabilitation for the victim's family.

State vs Accused in Tuticorin POCSO case

A special POCSO court in Thoothukudi sentenced Dharma Muneeswaran to a double death penalty on 25 May 2026 for the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl. As reported on 5 June 2026, the case has been referred to the Madras High Court for confirmation of the sentence.

State of Tamil Nadu vs Daswant — 2017 Mugalivakkam minor rape and murder case

Dashwanth was previously sentenced to death for the 2017 rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl in Mugalivakkam. The Supreme Court of India set aside his conviction and acquitted him on 8 October 2025. As reported on 28 May 2026, the Tamil Nadu government stated its intention to file a curative petition against this acquittal.

State vs M Dharma Muneeswaran — Thoothukudi rape and murder case

A special court in Thoothukudi sentenced M Dharma Muneeswaran to death for the rape and murder of a minor girl. The court delivered the verdict on two separate counts of the offences.

A fast-track court in Fatehabad sentenced two men to death for the kidnapping, gangrape, and murder of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in the Tohana area.

State vs Chandrabhan Sanap — Mumbai techie rape and murder case

Chandrabhan Sanap was originally convicted and sentenced to death by a trial court for the 2014 rape and murder of a woman in Mumbai, a decision upheld by the Bombay High Court in 2018. On 28 January 2025, the Supreme Court of India set aside this conviction and acquitted him, citing significant gaps in the prosecution's evidence.

State vs. Six accused — 2012 Delhi bus gang-rape and murder case (Nirbhaya)

On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was gang-raped, brutally assaulted, and murdered in a moving bus in south Delhi. Six people were accused of the crime; one was a juvenile. Four adult convicts were sentenced to death and executed in March 2020 at Tihar jail. The case led to significant reforms in sexual assault laws in India.

The case involves the 2002 gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of her family members. The trial court judge who delivered the 2008 life imprisonment verdict commented on the sentencing.

State vs Mukesh and others — Nirbhaya case

In the 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder case, the Supreme Court of India upheld the death sentences of four convicts in May 2017. Following the exhaustion of all legal remedies, the four convicts were executed by hanging at Tihar Jail on 20 March 2020.
