State vs Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone — 2012 Italian Marines shooting case

The Supreme Court of India closed criminal proceedings against two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala in 2012, following the payment of compensation to the victims' families. As of 27 April 2026, the Court has issued a notice regarding a petition from the owner of the vessel Enrica Lexie, who is seeking the release of a 3 crore bond previously executed in the Kerala High Court.

State vs S Yuvaraj and others — Gokulraj murder case

A special court convicted ten individuals, including prime accused S. Yuvaraj, for the murder of a Dalit youth named Gokulraj. On 2 June 2023, the Madras High Court upheld the life imprisonment sentences for eight of the convicts. As reported on 17 March 2026, S. Yuvaraj has filed a petition requesting the reopening of the investigation into the death of DSP Vishnupriya.

State vs. Accused — Rape and murder of 6-year-old girl in Maval Taluka

The Pune Sessions Court sentenced a 24-year-old man to death for the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Maval Taluka as reported on 23 March 2024. The Bombay High Court set aside the death sentence and ordered a fresh trial on 16 March 2026.

CBI vs Chhota Rajan — Jaya Shetty murder case

The CBI's prosecution of gangster Chhota Rajan for the 2001 murder of Mumbai hotelier Jaya Shetty. A special court in Mumbai sentenced him to life imprisonment on 30 May 2024; in September 2025 the Supreme Court cancelled the bail the Bombay High Court had granted him while his appeal is pending.

State of Uttarakhand vs Unknown Accused — 2015 POCSO rape and murder case

In September 2025, the Supreme Court of India acquitted two individuals, including a death row convict, in the 2015 rape and murder case of a seven-year-old girl in Uttarakhand. The court ruled that the chain of circumstantial evidence was incomplete, overturning the 2017 conviction delivered by the Uttarakhand High Court.

State vs Arun Gawli — Shiv Sena corporator Jamsandekar murder case

Arun Gawli was convicted by a special MCOCA court on 24 August 2012 for the 2007 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar, and the Bombay High Court upheld this conviction on 10 December 2019. The Supreme Court of India granted bail to Arun Gawli on 28 August 2025, overturning a previous denial of his plea as reported on 20 February 2025.

State vs. 17 accused — Murder of Head Constable Ratan Lal

This case concerns the murder of Head Constable Ratan Lal during the 2020 Delhi riots. In November 2024, a court ordered the framing of charges, including murder, arson, and dacoity, against 25 accused individuals. As reported on 18 July 2025, the Delhi High Court is currently considering a plea for discharge filed by one of the accused.

State of West Bengal vs Suresh Paswan — 2013 Kidderpore rape and murder case

The Calcutta High Court commuted the death sentence of Suresh Paswan to a life term with no remission for 50 years. The convict was found guilty in 2019 of the 2013 rape and murder of a toddler in Kidderpore.

State vs Sushil Kumar — Sagar Rana murder case

Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar is accused of the murder of Sagar Dhankar at Chhatrasal Stadium. A Delhi court officially framed charges of murder and other offences against him and 17 co-accused on 13 October 2022. The Delhi High Court granted bail to Sushil Kumar on 4 March 2025.

State vs Chandrabhan Sanap — Mumbai techie rape and murder case

Chandrabhan Sanap was originally convicted and sentenced to death by a trial court for the 2014 rape and murder of a woman in Mumbai, a decision upheld by the Bombay High Court in 2018. On 28 January 2025, the Supreme Court of India set aside this conviction and acquitted him, citing significant gaps in the prosecution's evidence.

State vs Mohan Nayak N — Gauri Lankesh murder case

Mohan Nayak N, an accused in the 2017 murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, faces charges under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act after the Supreme Court restored them in October 2021. As reported on 8 December 2023, the Karnataka High Court granted him regular bail, and the Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging this release on 21 August 2024.

State vs. Six accused — 2012 Delhi bus gang-rape and murder case (Nirbhaya)

On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was gang-raped, brutally assaulted, and murdered in a moving bus in south Delhi. Six people were accused of the crime; one was a juvenile. Four adult convicts were sentenced to death and executed in March 2020 at Tihar jail. The case led to significant reforms in sexual assault laws in India.

Reshma vs State of Uttarakhand — Rape and murder of a minor in Dehradun

Yusuf Alias Sonu was convicted for the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Dehradun. Following a stay of his death sentence by the Supreme Court, the High Court of Uttarakhand issued a judgment on 2 May 2024, referring the criminal matter for confirmation.

State of Karnataka vs B.A. Umesh alias Umesh Reddy

B.A. Umesh alias Umesh Reddy is a serial killer convicted for rape and murder who has faced multiple legal challenges regarding his death sentence and solitary confinement. The Supreme Court of India ruled on 4 November 2022 that his decade-long solitary confinement was illegal due to the resulting mental trauma. Most recently, the Karnataka High Court rejected his petition concerning ongoing legal challenges to his conviction and sentencing as reported on 27 February 2024.

State vs Ravi Kapoor and others — Soumya Vishwanathan murder case

Journalist Soumya Vishwanathan was shot dead in her car in South Delhi on September 30, 2008. Four individuals convicted of her murder were granted bail by the Delhi High Court, which suspended their life sentences pending the outcome of their appeals.

State vs. Unknown — 2020 North East Delhi riots murder case (Rahul Solanki)

The Delhi High Court heard bail pleas for three accused individuals charged in connection with the murder of Rahul Solanki during the 2020 North East Delhi riots.

State vs Ravi Pujari

Alleged underworld don Ravi Pujari was extradited from Senegal to India in 2020 to face over 100 cases, including murder and extortion. In July 2023, he petitioned the Karnataka High Court to expedite his trial and challenged the legality of being tried for cases not specified in his extradition order. The matter remains pending before the Karnataka High Court as of 28 July 2023.

State of Kerala vs Sooraj Kumar — Uthra murder case

Sooraj Kumar was convicted by a trial court for the murder of his wife, Uthra, using a cobra to bite her while she slept. While the trial court sentenced him to life imprisonment as reported on 16 October 2021, the Kerala High Court admitted his appeal challenging the conviction and sentence on 4 January 2022.

State of Maharashtra vs Vijay Jadhav and others — Shakti Mills gangrape case

The Bombay High Court commuted the death sentences of three convicts to life imprisonment in the 2013 Shakti Mills gangrape case. The court upheld their conviction for the gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai.

State of Maharashtra vs Ankur Panwar — Preeti Rathi acid attack case

Ankur Panwar was convicted for the 2013 acid attack and subsequent death of Preeti Rathi at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai. The Bombay High Court upheld the conviction but commuted the death penalty awarded by the trial court to life imprisonment, citing the convict's young age and potential for reformation.
