Unidentified detenu vs State of Andhra Pradesh — PIT NDPS Act preventive detention challenge

The Andhra Pradesh High Court quashed a preventive detention order passed under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988 (PIT NDPS Act). The court ruled that the detention was vitiated due to the failure of the detaining authority to consider relevant bail orders and conditions, as well as the failure to inform the detenu of their right to make a representation to the Central Government.

A.P. Hinduja vs State of Maharashtra

The Bombay High Court quashed a criminal prosecution against the Managing Trustee of Hinduja Hospital regarding alleged violations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The court held that a trust cannot be equated to a 'company' or 'association of persons' under the Act and that the designation 'Managing Trustee' alone is insufficient to sustain criminal liability without specific averments of involvement.

State vs Gopal Kumar — Heroin seizure case in Shimla

Gopal Kumar was arrested by Shimla police on 20 June 2026 after 16 grams of heroin were recovered from a Kanlog homestay. Following an investigation into his alleged links with an interstate drug network, police froze assets worth Rs 2.09 crore on 11 August 2026. The Himachal Pradesh High Court granted bail to Gopal Kumar on 12 October 2026, subject to specific conditions, while the case remains under investigation.

Security lapse in Assam to Bihar ganja smuggling case

The Patna High Court is overseeing a case regarding the smuggling of 63kg of ganja from Assam to Bihar involving two juveniles. As reported on 25 September 2026, the court granted bail to the two juveniles and directed the Senior Superintendent of Police in Patna to conduct an inquiry into security lapses at state checkpoints within three months.

State vs Chatha — Drug trafficking case

Chatha, a drug trafficker, had a detention order quashed by the High Court. Approximately 39.936 kg of heroin, precursor chemicals, ammunition, and two clandestine heroin-processing laboratories were recovered in connection with the case.

Harmanjit Singh Sandhu (alias Hamma) v. Union of India — Commercial quantity NDPS case

A case involving seizures of commercial-quantity narcotics, heard by the Punjab & Haryana High Court. The court noted the NCB's submission that the contraband recovered attracted the statutory rigour of Section 37 of the NDPS Act.

State vs Siddhanth Kapoor and others — 2022 Bengaluru drug case

Actor Siddhanth Kapoor and two others were booked in a 2022 Bengaluru rave party drug case. The Karnataka High Court has quashed the FIR against all three accused, bringing an end to the proceedings.

State vs seven accused — tramadol and alprazolam drug case

A Chhattisgarh High Court acquitted seven accused in an NDPS case citing serious probe lapses. Subsequent raids in Chhattisgarh and Gujarat led to the arrest of eight people and seizure of large quantities of tramadol and alprazolam tablets; in September 2025, a special NDPS court had sentenced other accused to rigorous imprisonment.

State vs. Five accused — 833 kg ganja case, Chhattisgarh

On 7 July 2026, the Chhattisgarh High Court acquitted five men in an 833-kilogram ganja seizure case, setting aside the 15-year prison sentences previously imposed by a Special NDPS Court. On 8 July 2026, the High Court further directed the DGP-DRI to conduct an accountability inquiry into the escape of the main accused from DRI custody during the investigation, citing serious procedural lapses.

State vs. Navdeep — Hyderabad Drug Case

The Telangana State Narcotics Control Bureau investigated actor Navdeep Pallapolu in connection with a drug abuse case involving Tollywood personalities. The Telangana High Court quashed the criminal case against the actor on 9 January 2026, noting that no narcotic substances were found in his possession.

Igatpuri drug party case

Nashik rural police booked 22 individuals, including television and film personalities, following a raid on two villas in Igatpuri for alleged drug consumption on 27 June 2021. Authorities investigated a potential Rajasthan connection and awaited chemical analysis reports as of 04 July 2021. The Bombay High Court granted bail to two of the accused on 27 August 2021.
