Gunjan Girija Kumari and Others v. State of NCT of Delhi — Caste-based abuse and SC/ST Act

In an appeal by Gunjan Girija Kumari and others, the Supreme Court ruled on 11 May 2026 that casteist abuses uttered inside a private residential house, away from public view, do not constitute an offence under Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the SC/ST Act. Following this determination, the Court quashed the criminal proceedings that had been previously dismissed by the Delhi High Court on 22 August 2024.

State of Tamil Nadu vs Accused — Dr. SD Subbiah murder case

The sessions court initially sentenced seven individuals to death and two to life imprisonment for the murder of neurologist Dr. SD Subbiah. Following an acquittal of all accused by the Madras High Court in June 2024, the Supreme Court set aside the acquittals on 19 May 2026. The Supreme Court restored the convictions of the seven individuals while modifying their sentencing to life imprisonment, with two others permitted to seek pardon.

State vs Amritpal Singh — National Security Act detention

Amritpal Singh, the chief of Waaris Punjab De, was detained under the National Security Act following allegations of attempting to revive militancy in Punjab. The Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed his challenge to the detention order on 16 April 2026. Following the conclusion of these proceedings, Punjab Police took custody of Singh at Dibrugarh Central Jail on 22 April 2026 regarding the Ajnala violence case, with the court ordering that trial proceedings be conducted virtually.

State vs. Accused — Rape and murder of 6-year-old girl in Maval Taluka

The Pune Sessions Court sentenced a 24-year-old man to death for the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Maval Taluka as reported on 23 March 2024. The Bombay High Court set aside the death sentence and ordered a fresh trial on 16 March 2026.

State of Bihar vs Chandra Bhushan Singh

Chandra Bhushan Prasad was the prime accused in a case involving the custodial deaths of two suspects while serving as the Station House Officer of Dumra police station. Following a 2019 incident where he escaped from police custody, the Patna High Court delivered its judgment in the criminal case against him on 12 January 2026.

State vs Bhupinder Singh Hooda — Land Scam Case

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda faces ongoing trial proceedings concerning an alleged land acquisition scam in Manesar. The Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected a petition from the former Chief Minister to stay these proceedings as reported on 7 November 2025.

Former AAP MLA Prakash Jarwal was convicted for the abetment of suicide of a doctor who died in April 2020. Following his conviction, the former MLA moved to the Delhi High Court to challenge the verdict as reported on 24 September 2025.

CBI vs Chhota Rajan — Jaya Shetty murder case

The CBI's prosecution of gangster Chhota Rajan for the 2001 murder of Mumbai hotelier Jaya Shetty. A special court in Mumbai sentenced him to life imprisonment on 30 May 2024; in September 2025 the Supreme Court cancelled the bail the Bombay High Court had granted him while his appeal is pending.

State vs Arun Gawli — Shiv Sena corporator Jamsandekar murder case

Arun Gawli was convicted by a special MCOCA court on 24 August 2012 for the 2007 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar, and the Bombay High Court upheld this conviction on 10 December 2019. The Supreme Court of India granted bail to Arun Gawli on 28 August 2025, overturning a previous denial of his plea as reported on 20 February 2025.

BIT Mesra vs Estate of deceased student — Jharkhand High Court compensation case

The Jharkhand High Court ordered BIT Mesra to pay Rs 20 lakhs in compensation regarding the death of a Dalit student on campus. The court emphasized that university authorities have a responsibility to ensure the safety of students.

State of West Bengal vs Suresh Paswan — 2013 Kidderpore rape and murder case

The Calcutta High Court commuted the death sentence of Suresh Paswan to a life term with no remission for 50 years. The convict was found guilty in 2019 of the 2013 rape and murder of a toddler in Kidderpore.

Navneet Kaur Rana vs State of Maharashtra — Caste certificate case

The Supreme Court heard an appeal against a Bombay High Court judgment that had cancelled the caste certificate of Amravati MP Navneet Kaur Rana. The High Court had previously alleged that the 'mochi' caste certificate was obtained using fabricated documents.

State (CBI/ED) v. A Raja, K Kanimozhi & Others — 2G Spectrum Allocation Appeal

The Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate filed appeals in the Delhi High Court challenging the December 2017 acquittal of former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP K Kanimozhi, and 17 others in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case. In March 2024, the Delhi High Court admitted the CBI's leave to appeal after six years and 125 listings. The appeals are currently at the stage of hearings on admissibility and substantive grounds.

State of Karnataka vs B.A. Umesh alias Umesh Reddy

B.A. Umesh alias Umesh Reddy is a serial killer convicted for rape and murder who has faced multiple legal challenges regarding his death sentence and solitary confinement. The Supreme Court of India ruled on 4 November 2022 that his decade-long solitary confinement was illegal due to the resulting mental trauma. Most recently, the Karnataka High Court rejected his petition concerning ongoing legal challenges to his conviction and sentencing as reported on 27 February 2024.

State vs Ravi Kapoor and others — Soumya Vishwanathan murder case

Journalist Soumya Vishwanathan was shot dead in her car in South Delhi on September 30, 2008. Four individuals convicted of her murder were granted bail by the Delhi High Court, which suspended their life sentences pending the outcome of their appeals.

Rujira Banerjee vs Enforcement Directorate — Media coverage of investigation
