In re: Validity of temple land gift to Tamil Nadu government
On 16 October 2026, the Supreme Court of India declared that temple inam lands cannot be gifted to the Tamil Nadu government, ruling such transactions void ab initio under the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1959. The Court clarified that the State acts only as a custodian rather than an owner of temple property. Consequently, the government was ordered to pay a monthly rent of 31,000 rupees for the continued occupation of the land by a taluk office and pay a one lakh rupee fine.
