NGT pulls up Delhi govt and DPCC after uranium found in 13-15% of groundwater samples
The National Green Tribunal has impleaded the Delhi Government and Delhi Pollution Control Committee as additional respondents in the uranium contamination case after reports showed that 13-15.66% of groundwater samples from 86 monitoring locations across Delhi in 2024 exceeded the permissible uranium limit of 30 parts per billion (ppb).
Explanation in simple terms
A court called the NGT found that uranium, a radioactive element, was detected in about 13 to 15 percent of groundwater samples tested in Delhi. The court criticized the Delhi government and the pollution control board for not properly addressing this health risk. Uranium in drinking water can cause serious health problems, so the court is demanding they take action to fix the problem and protect people's water supply.
